Corn and Grain Sorghum:
- Do not place urea, UAN (28-0-0), ammonium thiosulfate (ATS, 12-0-0-26S) or boron in direct contact with the seed.
- N + K2O in contact with the seed should be limited to 10 lbs/acre for 30 inch rows.
- Reduce seed placed fertilizer by 50% when soil conditions are dry or sandy.
- 5 gallons/acre of 10-34-0 with the seed has shown to be safe.
Soybean:
- If seeding in 6 to 7 inch rows, limit seed placed N + K2O to 5 lbs/acre.
- Do not place urea, UAN, ATS or boron in direct contact with the seed.
- If seeding in 15 to 30 inch rows, do not apply fertilizer in contact with seed.
Small Grains: (6-7 inch drill rows)
- N + K2O should not exceed 25-30 lbs/acre when placed in direct contact with the seed when row spacing is 6 or 7 inches.
- Do not place ATS or boron in direct contact with the seed.
- If seeding in 6 or 7 inch rows, urea in contact with the seed should be limited to 15 lbs/acre, 10 lbs/acre if dry or sandy soils.
- Apply anhydrous ammonia at least 2-3 inches to the side and below the seed. Seed injury will occur if anhydrous ammonia comes in contact with the seed.
- Reduce seed placed fertilizer by 50% when soil conditions are dry or sandy.
Dry Edible Beans and Potatoes:
- Do not apply any fertilizer in contact with the seed.
Sugar Beets:
- 3-4 gallons/acre of 10-34-0 with the seed. This rate has been shown to be safe when planting in 22 inch rows.
Flax, Canola, Mustard, Safflower, and Buckwheat:
- N + K2O in contact with the seed should be limited to 10 lbs/acre when planting in 6 inch or 7 inch rows. Limit N + K2O to 5 lbs/acre if soil conditions are dry or sandy.
- Do not place DAP, urea, UAN, ATS or boron in direct contact with the seed.
- Limit P2O5 applications to 20 lbs/ac.
General Comments:
- Dry or sandy soil conditions increase the risk of crop injury (poor germination and emergence) from seed placed fertilizers; therefore, it is suggested to reduce the fertilizer rate by 50%.
- Monoammonium phosphate (MAP, 11-52-0) has shown to be safer to use when placed with the seed than DAP (18-46-0).
- If the row spacing of your seeding equipment is not listed, contact you local agronomist for safe application rates.
- These fertilizer guidelines are compiled from various University and Extension research publications from the Upper Great Plains of the US and Canada.
